How to Play Backseat Rally with Friends or an AI Co-driver

Last updated:

Team up in one car with a driver and a co-driver who calls upcoming turns. You can invite a friend, join another player's car, offer an open seat, or drive solo with an AI navigation partner.

Press C to open MY GARAGE, select an available car, and press Enter for Next. On CO-DRIVER, choose INVITE, select a server player, and use Spawn + invite. Your friend must accept the invitation card to join. To ride in a nearby car, press E when Co-drive appears. Drivers can also choose LEAVE SEAT OPEN for other players or AI CO-DRIVER under SOLO; with AI, you still drive.

Choose a Car and Open Co-driver Setup

  1. Press C to open MY GARAGE.
  2. On the CAR page, select an available vehicle.
  3. Press Enter for Next to open CO-DRIVER.

Choose the option that fits your session:

  • INVITE — TWO PLAYERS: pick a specific player to ride alongside you.
  • AI CO-DRIVER — SOLO: drive with an AI navigation partner.
  • LEAVE SEAT OPEN — ANYONE: offer your passenger seat to other players.

Use Q/E to switch options or Backspace to go back. If you need to check which vehicles you can use, see the car unlocks and garage guide.

Invite a Friend and Confirm They Joined

  1. Select INVITE on the CO-DRIVER page.
  2. Choose your friend under Players in this server. Friends appear first; some players have an IN A CAR label beneath their names.
  3. Click Spawn + invite, or press Enter, to spawn your car and send the invitation.
  4. Have your friend accept the invitation card they receive.
  5. Look for the notification that the player is your co-driver, then check that they are seated beside you.

If your friend is missing from the server list, use the Invite friends tile with the + at the end of the list to invite them into the game. Once they appear in the server list, select them for the co-driver invitation.

The start panel can temporarily show CO-DRIVER AI while your human invitation is pending. That label alone does not mean the invitation failed; check for the joining notification and your passenger.

Join a Car or Offer an Open Seat

Join as the co-driver

Approach a nearby car and press E when the Co-drive prompt appears. Use the prompt to identify a car you can interact with.

You can also choose PLAY → CO-DRIVE from the role menu. The co-driver sits beside the driver and calls upcoming turns.

Offer your passenger seat

On the garage's CO-DRIVER page, select LEAVE SEAT OPEN. Look for the ANYONE heading and OPEN SEAT label. Choose this when you want another player to join without selecting a specific friend.

The main menu also has a Find a co-driver entry: look for the + at the top right, beside the driver information.

Select an AI Co-driver for Solo Driving

To play alone, select your car and continue to CO-DRIVER, then choose AI CO-DRIVER. It is the SOLO option, with the passenger position labeled RALLY BOT.

You drive while the AI rides alongside as your co-driver. A friend's avatar can accompany you as the AI navigation partner. Choose this option when you want to drive without waiting for a human teammate.

Get Ready for the Stage

Before setting off with a human teammate, turn on sound and use voice chat so the driver can hear the co-driver's calls. If a notification says voice volume is zero, raise it in settings; see voice and driving settings for the relevant options.

  1. Drive into the start box and stop. Use S to brake when BRAKE TO A STOP appears.
  2. Press Enter when the panel shows START STAGE. If it already shows STARTING IN, wait for the countdown.
  3. Wait for the green GO signal before beginning your timed run.

The driver controls the car while the co-driver reports upcoming turns. Learn how to communicate direction and severity in the co-driver turn-call guide. For start-box problems or hosting a multiplayer race, use the stage and race setup guide.
